The DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communication) meter is used as part of the calibration to ensure the DSRC functionality of the SMART Tachograph works.

The DSRC meter is a high-frequency communication transmitter and receiver for short distances. The meter is powered by an internal (rechargeable) battery or via an external power supply. The meter reads and transmits DSRC data to and from the vehicle's DSRC antenna. The DSRC antenna is connected to the smart tachograph via an antenna cable. The communication between the DSRC meter and the Workshop Tab is via Bluetooth®. The Workshop Tab controls the tests and processes the result on the calibration report.

Positioning the DSRC equipment

The transmitter and receiver of the DSRC meter are continuously in standby mode to be immediately available for the Workshop Tab, if it indicates that it wants to start the DSRC test. Only during this test is the DRSC module active.

A number of things to take into account with regard to the placement:

  • The angle between the DSRC transmitter and receiver must not exceed 45° - If the angle becomes too sharp, they may no longer detect each other.
  • The in-vehicle DSRC antenna is mounted in the centre of the windscreen - This can be at the top or bottom. The arrangement of the DSRC meter must therefore be able to detect both places. Placing too close to the vehicle can lead to errors. Placing too far away from the vehicle could also lead to communication errors.
  • The DSRC meter can be mounted on a tripod.
  • The DSRC meter be placed between 2 and 10 meters from the vehicle (location DSRC antenna) - Ideally, the DSRC meter should be placed directly in front of the vehicle within a range of 4 to 8 meters.

Adjust the equipment if the range is not sufficient. If the DSRC meter is placed in the correct position between two vehicles, multiple Workshop Tabs (with software version 4.6 and later) can link to one DSRC meter, but never at the same time.

The DSRC antenna

In the case of new vehicles, positioning is subject to the type-approval of the vehicle. In case of damage to the windscreen or other damage that requires the antenna to be replaced, the replacement of the antenna will be found in the manufacturer's guidelines.

The location of the DSRC antenna is fairly generically defined in the regulation. Pay attention to the angle of the window and any coating on the window that may interfere with communication.

The definition in the regulation reads: "As close as possible in the middle behind the windscreen in a trouble-free place, where the antenna must be placed parallel to the road surface (i.e. looking straight forward)."
